The SOE Alumni Homecoming Gala was a success with a blast from the past to the present on Monday, January 30, 2012 at the SBPA 129! It was a memorable celebration with the fitting theme, "Meeting between the Young Ones and the Young Once." Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera, Immediate Past President of the SOE Alumni Association, served as the Mistress of Ceremony. SOE Dean, Dr. Patrick Leddy, greeted the audience with a warm welcome, which was followed by a truly inspirational speech by the UOG President, Dr. Robert Underwood. Alumni from the Class of 1956 to the present were treated with entertainment of oldies but goodies, as well as modern performances. Among the entertainers were GEMS, StarGazers Dance Troupe, song renditions by Lovelyn Trinidad and Kristian Villanueva, as well as community singing led by Dr. Lourdes Ferrer and Matt Raymundo. Dr. Lourdes Klitzkie, SOE Alumni Advisor, was instrumental in inviting many of our SOE Alumni who were among the first students at UOG 60 years ago! BIBA UOG! BIBA SOE!

Conversatorio with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor hosted a Conversatorio (Conversation in Spanish) today, January 27, from 10:00 am to 12:30 p.m. at the University of Guam Field House. Justice Sotomayor is the Supreme Court’s 111th justice, its first Hispanic justice and its third female justice. It was an honor and pleasure to see Justice Sotomayor in person and to hear her inspirational responses to the young children of Guam who had the opportunity to ask her a few questions.

Ginen I Hila pays tribute to the Guam Insular Guard Forces

MORE GUAM INSULAR GUARD FORCES CEREMONY SNAPSHOTS...

The Stirs of Echoes went off beautifully this morning, December 10, 2011, at the Plaza De Espåña, according to Ginen I Hila President-Elect Peter Onedera. Great job to President Felix C. Benavente and committee members.

Ginen I Hila paid tribute to the Guam Insular Guard Forces who defended the governor's palace in Hagåtña which then became noted as the start of the dark days of World War II. The group paid tribute at 4am at the statue of the praying hands that is right next to the pope statue across the Skinner’s Plaza. As was done in the past two years, a short narration took place by one of our members giving the details of how the Insular forces defended the governor's palace in the wee hours of 4am just as the Japanese soldiers were entering Hagåtña. There were lives lost at that encounter but it is now relegated into our history books and this Saturday marks the 70th year which is also simultaneously being observed by the Guam Museum, the War in the Pacific National Historical Park, the Guam Preservation Trust and the Guam Legislature. Ginen I Hila members verbally called out the names of the over one hundred thirty members of the Guam Insular Guard Forces accompanied by a single drum beat. At the end, a car horn was heard signaling what also was done on December 10, 1941.

Pictured above is the 31st Guam Legislative Resolution given on October 27, 2011 for my role as an ESL teacher, particularly regarding the achievement and success of LBJ Elementary School and its SAT10 performance. Although I'm not an ESL Teacher/Coordinator at LBJ anymore, as I've transferred to Marcial A. Sablan Elementary (MASE) School to serve the same role, I served the LBJ children for 15 years. I will always cherish the years I've spent there, and likewise this same sentiment will follow at MASE.

We must also remember that we can't work alone to empower our students. The achievement and success of our children are the result of collaborative efforts from all stakeholders! KUDOS TO ALL WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

The 24th Guam Micronesia Island Fair will be held October 14-16, 2011 at the Ypao Beach Park, Tumon. It will showcase and celebrate the rich cultures of Micronesia, including the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of Belau, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Nauru, Kiribati, and Guam.

The Fair will highlight cultural presentations from each delegation with an emphasis on regional unity toward the development of the agriculture and tourism industries. Parsons Scholarship - Deadline to Apply Oct. 14, 2011
University of Guam pre-engineering students who have completed ES201 Engineering Statistics or who are enrolled in the course for the fall 2011 semester are encouraged to apply for a Parsons scholarship.

Parsons, a construction and engineering firm, generously contributed $15,000 in scholarship funds to support pre-engineering students at the University of Guam. There are several Parsons Scholarships available for the fall 2011 semester worth up to $3,750 each. The scholarships will be awarded in October based on academic performance and financial need. Scholarship amounts will vary depending on a student’s financial need.

To apply for the Parsons Scholarship you must be a resident of Guam or the region and submit the following documents:

1. Application form

2. A one-page personal statement about yourself and your academic goals. In the statement explain why you are pursuing a degree in engineering.

3. A copy of your official transcripts

All documents must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office located in the UOG Field House by 5:00 p.m. on October 14, 2011.

Apply for the Upcoming UOG AmeriCorps program year

Each year we are look for bright students who are interested in improving our community and leaving a positive imprint on society. Members are tasked with maintaining a healthy relationship with community and their satellite program locations. We offer incentives for individuals who are selected for this position, which requires interested individuals to graciously devote their time and effort toward tutoring, mentoring, and volunteering in the community. Individuals may apply at the University of Guam AmeriCorps Success Center Administrative Office at the UOG Student Center or at any of the UOG AmeriCorps Satellites. Members are contracted to serve their community for one service year and are given a monthly stipend of around $400.00USD for a half-time position and around $800.00USD for a full-time position. Members are additionally required to volunteer between 20-32 hours a week. An education award is given to half time members who meet or exceed 900 hours total in a program year and/or 1700 hours for full time members in a program year.

The 50^th Council of the University of Guam Student Government Association is pleased to announce that Book Scholarships for school year 2011-2012 are now available to all enrolled students of the University of Guam. Applications for UOG Student Government Association Book Scholarships are now available. The scholarship will be awarded to deserving full-time or part-time University of Guam students, granting them store credit of $150 at the UOG Triton Bookstore, valid from Fall 2011 to Spring 2012. Applications are available at the SGA Session Hall, Financial Aid Office, and each school’s respective offices. The completed application (required documents included) must be submitted no later than 7:00 p.m. on September 30, 2011.

Policy Challenges Webinar: Supporting the Transition to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics

OVERVIEW

Nearly all jurisdictions in the Northeast and Islands Region have adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) developed by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers. Yet, as states and districts seek to implement the CCSS, policymakers and practitioners need to understand the foundational research and initiatives behind the standards, as well as learn how to build students’ knowledge so they will graduate high school able to succeed in college and in workforce training programs.

In this webinar, Dr. Francis “Skip” Fennell, a mathematics education expert and member of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, will bridge research to practice as it relates to implementation of the CCSS initiative in the area of mathematics. He will clarify links between the CCSS and the National Mathematics Advisory Panel Report recommendations and provide an overview of the research foundations and policy considerations for educational leaders and practitioners to understand and implement the CCSS. He will discuss the new expectations for mathematical competency embedded in the CCSS and share practical strategies for building students’ foundational mathematics knowledge, particularly as they move through elementary and middle-school grades. Webinar participants will be able to submit questions to Dr. Fennell through an online chat room.

Dr. Francis “Skip” Fennell is Professor of Education at McDaniel College and project director of the Elementary Mathematics Specialists and Teacher Leaders Project. He is widely published in professional journals and textbooks related to elementary and middle-grades mathematics education, and he served on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, chairing the Conceptual Knowledge and Skills Task Group. He also is a co-author of the IES Practice Guide: “Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten Through 8th Grade.” In 2008, Dr. Fennell completed a two-year presidency of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). He currently is principal investigator on a project aimed at designing a graduate curriculum for elementary mathematics teacher leaders, creating a clearinghouse of existing materials, and developing support materials for elementary mathematics specialists and teacher leaders. Dr. Fennell has been a featured speaker at several REL events and webinars across the country.

TESOL has a new name: TESOL International Association

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages is now TESOL International Association. The TESOL Board of Directors approved the name change after many months of discussion and deliberation. The TESOL Board also recently approved a new three-year strategic plan as well as a new credo and updated core values. In addition to the new name, TESOL has also launched a new logo and later this fall, the association will launch a brand new website. The full press release is available on the TESOL website. In today’s often volatile teaching environment, and with expectations heightened, it’s critical to be prepared. In a recent Question of the Week, we asked readers: “What’s the one thing you wish your education professors had told you about teaching or classroom management?”

From school of education experts to veteran teachers with decades of experience under their belts, eSchool News readers weighed in by the dozens with their best or most useful advice for beginning teachers. GCC held its fall Convocation at the Hyatt Hotel. It was a meaningful gathering with countless highlights that GCC has done to make a difference in its students and the community as a whole. Dr. Mary Okada spoke about the various accomplishments GCC has much to be proud of, along with the unavoidable budget realities. Dr. Ray Somera spoke about the importance of accreditation and mentioned various acronyms associated with its empowerment. He emphasized the S-U-N, leaving us to reflect on the following: "S" for the standards of good practice; "U" for the unwavering commitment, and "N" for the next steps we must take to complete our mission. During the last two weeks in July, the 22 students of theMACIMISE project pursuing doctoral and master degrees held their annual meeting in Pohnpei, FSM. Taking in the local culture and sights, as well as the characteristic hospitality of the region, the MACIMISERS worked hard on the mission of the project that focuses on local practices, languages, and the preservation of mathematical ideas associated with these practices and languages.

Thank you to Pohnpei for successfully hosting the 27th Pacific Educational Conference (PEC).

More than 900 educators from approximately 20 countries participated in 165 presentations and plenary sessions.

Educators from the Pacific region and around the world shared instructional strategies for contextual and culturally grounded learning. Assessment and evaluation; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education; teacher training technology; math; and climate change were just a few of the subjects discussed at this year’s PEC. We were all energized to bring home new learnings and innovations to classrooms and agencies. We are currently building on the momentum created by educators and others at the PEC to practically and coherently address the ever-changing education needs of the region.

We thank our many contributors to this issue of the Pacific Navigator and believe that you, our readers, will find its contents both useful and enjoyable.
