After presenting and participating in the PEC 2011 sessions, we not only had the opportunity to visit my Rosario Familia, but we also were able to gather together with my Neth Familia, who hosted a special dinner when we arrived in Pohnpei. Enjoy the following snapshots!

It was a wonderful experience to present at the 2011 Pacific Educational Conference in Pohnpei, FSM! I was able to also spend time with my Rosario familia. My great-great grandfather is Ignacio Rosario Tainatongo, and it's great that my Uncle John Rosario mentioned how he could see the family resemblance! A special Sakau Ceremony was also held in honor of the PEC Guam Delegation that I am member of. Enjoy the following snapshots!

During the last two weeks in July, the 22 students of theMACIMISE project pursuing doctoral and master degrees held their annual meeting in Pohnpei, FSM. Taking in the local culture and sights, as well as the characteristic hospitality of the region, the MACIMISERS worked hard on the mission of the project that focuses on local practices, languages, and the preservation of mathematical ideas associated with these practices and languages.

Kalahngan! Thank you to Pohnpei for successfully hosting the 27th Pacific Educational Conference (PEC). More than 900 educators from approximately 20 countries participated in 165 presentations and plenary sessions. Educators from the Pacific region and around the world shared instructional strategies for contextual and culturally grounded learning. Assessment and evaluation; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education; teacher training technology; math; and climate change were just a few of the subjects discussed at this year’s PEC. We were all energized to bring home new learnings and innovations to classrooms and agencies. We are currently building on the momentum created by educators and others at the PEC to practically and coherently address the ever-changing education needs of the region. We thank our many contributors to this issue of the Pacific Navigator and believe that you, our readers, will find its contents both useful and enjoyable. I was able to conduct my presentation on differentiated instruction, network with other Pacific educators, visit landmarks, and spend time with my Rosario and Neth familia! Tomorrow marks Guam's 67th Liberation Day! The island's annual liberation parade on July 21 is traditionally packed with crowds to celebrate Guam's freedom from Japan's cruel occupation. As part of our patriotism, we continue to celebrate and thank our Dear Uncle Sam - the United States and to those who serve in the Armed Forces who continue to fight for our freedom!
