Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Island-wide Poster Contest & Michael Jackson Look-a-Like Dance Contest: The University of Guam School of Education student organization, Association for Childhood Education International (UOG-ACEI) in conjuction with the UOG Student Government Association is sponsoring a Michael Jackson Look-a-Like Dance Contest on January 18 at the Micronesia Mall. The contest will begin promptly at 1:00 p.m. Registration is $5.00 at the mall between 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The UOG-ACEI is also sponsoring the anuual island-wide poster contest in recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration. The contest theme is Remembering the Dream. It is open to all public, private, and DODEA school children in K-12 grades. The announcement of the winner will be held at the Micronesia Mall on January 18 between 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m. The poster display will remain at the mall's center court from January 15 to 21.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Art Exhibit, entitled, Remember the Dream by Marilyn Malloy Jackson, a UOG Professor, will travel this year to the CNMI. The Art Exhibit will be held at the American Memorial Park Visitor's Center in Saipan.

The Guam Council of the International Reading Association helps educators and parents alike discover the wonder and the worlds to be found in books. Guam IRA is a professional organization for individuals who are genuinely concerned with the development of reading programs for children and adults. It is a group of people who work together to improve literacy and reading instruction in Guam and Micronesia.

Graduate students enrolled in ED638: Teaching with the Internet presented at the University of Guam’s 22nd Annual Regional Language Arts Conference held November 6 and 7 at the University of Guam and Guam Marriott Resort & Spa. The theme of the conference was Multicultural Approaches in Language Arts Education. The students’ presentation titled Using Internet Tools to Enhance Multicultural Education explored web sites aimed at enhancing multicultural education, including reading, writing, collaboration, professional development, instructional technology, WebQuests, and more. The website http://www.funschool.com provides learning activities for students, teachers and parents. There are many learning activities for grade levels Pre-K to 6^th grade. Most of the activities are quiz-type games that users can play for subjects such as Reading, Language Arts, and Math. There are also games for content areas, such as Science, Social Studies, and Health.

For students in Pre-K, there are matching, counting and printable coloring activities. K-2 students can have fun learning how to type and spell with the Language game Super Hyper Spider Typer! Students in the 3^rd-4^th grades can have fun with math and memorizing activities that become more challenging as they progress through levels. The 5^th-6^th grade students can apply their knowledge to trivia-type games on a variety of subjects. The website also includes a game that helps young learners support recycling.

The website also includes a link for parents to http://www.kaboose.com. On the website there is a blog where parents can read and share their stories, parenting tips, family activities, or just simply exchange ideas. Parents can also find seasonal/thematic arts and crafts activities, as well as many recipes that they can experiment with, such as grilling, cooking with kids, or healthy eating.

*ED638: Teaching with the Internet

The Guam International Reading Association's 10th Annual Community Book Fair be held on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Agana Shopping Center from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Bring the entire family for a fun day of literacy filled with books, Read Alouds, raffle prizes, and more! There will be exciting student performances including Maria Ulloa Elementary School’s Head Start students and the St. Francis Honor Choir. A special appearance of Clifford the Big Red Dog will also be available.

A special presentation of IRA’s Community Book Baskets will benefit the following: University of Guam’s School of Education Literacy Lab, Guam Memorial Hospital’s Pediatric Ward, Erica’s House, Department of Youth Affairs, and the Alee Shelter in order to promote literacy.

There will be an array of books just for you! There will be paperback and hardcover books, young adult literature, and an assortment of professional books—all at affordable prices. There will also be software, novelties, and brand new Read-A-Thon 2010: “Go Green, Go Read” stocking stuffers. Books for IRA’s upcoming visiting author, Eric Ode, will also be on sale. There will be items from Southern Creations, PBS Guam, School Essentials, and Scholastic. Other features include the make-n-take children’s craft table, face painting by ACEI, gift wrapping stations, and more! You won't want to miss this event!
