We'd like to say THANK YOU to all the students, parents, teachers, and everyone else who made our first LBJ/Tamuning Elementary School Walk/Run a success! Below are just a few of the snapshots taken during the event.

UOG’s Language Arts Conference Offers 2 Graduate Credits/3 CEUs

The University of Guam’s 22^nd Annual Regional Language Arts Conference (LAC) will offer 2 graduate credits for those who possess at least a bachelor's degree or 3 CEUs for those who do not hold a degree. The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, November 6 & 7, 2009 at the University of Guam and Guam Marriott Resort and Spa. As part of the course requirements, students must complete the following: Full attendance at the conference, classroom application of one or more of the strategies/techniques learned at the conference, write a brief summary for each session attended, and write a five-page, typed, double-spaced paper explaining how the Language Arts Conference has increased their knowledge and understanding of using multicultural approaches in language arts education.

Students must register for the conference before they register for the graduate credits/CEUs at the Professional International Programs, 2nd floor/MARC/Computer Center/PIP Building, Room #217. This course is also eligible for the Dr. Antonio C. Yamashita Educator Corps (YEC) support available for qualified Guam Department of Education teachers who have officially been processed through the YEC. For additional information from YEC, participants may call 735-2470.

Children’s Fair 2009 Halloweenville

The UOG-Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI) will be hosting its Children’s Fair 2009 Halloweenville on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the School of Education. Families are invited to free arts and crafts activities, interactive reading, ginger bread creations, painting factory/face painting, and more. The 22nd Annual Regional Language Arts Conference (LAC) will be held November

6-7, 2009. The theme is “Multicultural Approaches in Language Arts Education.”

The LAC is an opportunity for professional growth and enrichment in literacy for

educators in the Western Pacific region. Presentations will focus on reading and

writing across the content areas with particular attention on approaches in the

multicultural context. Proposals for individual and panel presentations on innovative

reaching strategies, research reports, and practical workshops are welcome.

Presentations will be scheduled in forty-five minute blocks.

IRA Newsletter Goes Green

As the Guam Chapter of the International Reading Association (IRA) continues its mission to promote literacy, it has made a commitment to effectively use technology, so that it can expand the ways it shares knowledge by reaching out to as many people as possible. By doing this, it can impact thousands of people globally, with a touch of a button all while reducing printing costs and our carbon footprint by consuming less paper.

This “Going Green” mindset is a necessary change for the Guam Chapter of the IRA as we search for ways we can live in a more environmentally friendly manner. By doing this, it will also save postage, energy, and natural resources! As it takes steps towards “Going Green” it is moving forward on “Going Digital!”

To do this, it has reactivated its website using a blog format, so that various IRA events can be archived for years to come!

LET US REMEMBER: 9/11

On September 11, we paid tribute to those who suffered from the 9/11 attacks on America. We will always remember those who lost their lives, those who sacrificed to help in any way they could, and the day that brought everyone from all walks of life, rich or poor, together as ONE! God Bless the families and friends of those we have lost, and the brave men and women who continue to fight for our freedom!

Undergraduate students enrolled in the EN100 Fundamentals of College English course completed the spring semester on May 12, 2009 with a presentation of their creative writing projects. The course is an integrated reading and writing course that prepares students for further English courses and further study at the University. Language and Literacy Master of Education students enrolled in the University of Guam's ED646 The Organization and Supervision of Reading Programs course completed the semester on May 14, 2009 with a presentation of their online LiveText Portfolio and Final Reflection at the University of Guam. The course introduces students to organization, administration, and supervision of school reading programs (K-12). Students examine roles of reading personnel, evaluate major reading programs, and develop, implement, and evaluate a reading program at the classroom and school level. They include webs, Venn diagrams, charts, and other visual tools that enable your ELLs to better comprehend and organize information that is taught. This will further allow your ELLs to develop their higher level thinking skills and promote their creativity.
